Are you distracted at work, wondering what new promotions you are missing on Elann?
Do you look for the nearest yarn points (trunk, shelves, baskets) when you visit your friends and colleagues homes?
Do you choose your holiday destination by the number of yarn stores within a 5 mile radius of the resort?
If these scenarios describe your behavior, you may be suffering from S.A.B.L.E (stash accumulation beyond life expectancy). There are many women out there who suffer from S.A.B.L.E and I am one of them.
I first realized I was a sufferer when my chest of draws exploded. Yes, it exploded. After cramming all my clothes into one draw, to make space for more yarn, it was ready to burst. After adding one more skein, it was in pieces.
But if you too have this affliction, don’t despair as although a cure has not been found (or researched), there are a few steps you can take to control your condition and make it work for you.
1. Start Something
Sometimes you spend more time planning projects than you do knitting them. Stop putting it off, and start a project today. Just like with a good book, once you pick it up you won’t be able to put it down.
2. Join a group
If you don’t belong to a knitting group already, then seriously consider joining one. A group can do wonders for your knit life, by introducing you to new people and new techniques. It encourages a little bit of knitting every week, and more importantly, helps you make some time for yourself outside of your work and home life.
3. Pick the perfect yarn
If you find a pattern or a project you like, take time to find a yarn that will help you to achieve it. Often you may buy a beautiful yarn, but then struggle to find a project that fits it. The best place to find patterns online is Ravelry.com, or if you want something in print try vogue knitting magazine for modern pattern ideas.
4. Embrace Summer Knitting
Yes it is hot and beautiful out, but that doesn’t mean those needles need to go away. Slip a project into your beach/lake bag and go knit in the great outdoors.
5. Think outside the box
You may have a pile of yarn that you’ve fallen out of love with over time, and just can’t find a use for. Consider giving your yarn a better home by giving it to a local charity, or holding a yarn swap. But if you can’t bare to part ways with your stash, then it’s time to think outside the box. There are many other uses for yarn out there. Check out the weekly updates “Outside the box- far out fibre projects from around the globe” to inspire you.
